Dublin's Future: New Visions for Ireland's Capital City

I enjoyed the launch of the new book Dublin’s Future last night (see previous post).  Well done to the SCSI for putting on a great night and supporting the research for the book with a grant.  Ciara Murphy, Director of SCSI was a professional compere.  Lord Mayor Montague encouraged the use of green technologies and reducing our draw on resources giving the example of Kilbarrack firestation that has cut its electricity and gas bill from thousands of euro a year to a few hundred by using less and having a greeen action plan!

Editor Lorcan Sirr called for a different approach to generating a sustainable City that draws on our rich cultural heritage as much as from more obvious economic resources.  It is time that the engineering functions of the Dublin became a service to the people again rather than being the driving force behind economic expansion.  And we should have an all Dublin Mayor or position akin to the New York Mayor.  He felt this person should not be drawn from the ranks of civil servants but should be a person elected by the people.  This person should have a profound understanding of urbanism and might even come from abroad.  I look forward to reading the book and to hearing your views on the future of Dublin.
