Street landscape architecture : a short vid. on what landscape architecture is and what landscape architect's do in designing public spaces posted by the American Society of Landscape Architect's (ASLA).
Whilst this is useful and a bit of fun I would caution - don't get the wrong idea about landscape architecture: most designs take considerably longer that a minute to produce and what they are showing is a very basic concept sketch that would be taken to a high level of detailed design usually assisted by computer aided design and computer rendering programmes. Along with design creativity, there is, of course, a high level of professional know-how that landscape architects add in terms of specifying materials, plants, construction details etc.

Tim, When I worked in church work, I tried to convince the congregation of the importance of a "welcoming" parking lot. May sound crazy but I believe that from the moment a member of the church parks the car, the walk through the parking lot, the walk up to the church, etc. all contribute or distract from the sense of welcome one should try to have in a church setting, or any setting for that matter. It was like pulling teeth. Some people just don't get it. The "total' environment enhances or distracts from the well being of the individual. Creating such in micro places like a parking lot for a church, store, etc, or larger areas of a street or city is for me, so important for human wholeness. As always, I enjoy stopping at your Blog. ReplyDeleteWholeheartedly agree with you Jack. On churches specifically I think that vegetation can be really important to create the right setting and mood. Generally, parking lots have to be much more than just spaces for parking cars, as often due to space restrictions they are at the front of a building or structure. So important to get the planting right for all sorts of reasons: scale, setting, colour, texture, atmosphere etc. That said some buildings work best when they stand out starkly...
